My moment of YES!
These past couple of years have been a whirlwind for me to say the least. We made the decision two years ago to leave New York and move to Los Angeles and it has been full of ups and downs. It was definitely a challenge to meet people and form a strong circle of friends when you literally don’t know anyone. I was working way too much and not getting into a serious rut around a year ago.
When I really started to look inward and identify the core issue, I realized I had been suffering from social anxiety.
I kept complaining about having no real friends in LA and would stay in my comfort zone at home. For those of you who don’t know, social anxiety is the fear of being judged by other people, which leads to avoidance. It’s a feeling of inadequacy, depression, humiliation, and embarrassment.
I knew something had to change and I had to be the one to do it. Finally I started to say YES to self care. I was so wrapped up on growing my social media platforms for my blog and working full time that I had stopped focussing on my happiness. When I decided to say YES to self care, I really began to focus on the things that bring me true joy. Don’t get me wrong, having this platform and being able to share my life is amazing, but it isn’t my only source of happiness.
I’m sharing my favorite self care steps that I say Yes to that helps overcome my social anxiety.
Saying YES to events
A big leap for me was actually starting to attend the events I am invited to. This time last year I would get the invite, RSVP Yes, and when the actually date rolled around I would make up some lame excuse not to go. Not anymore! Taking care of yourself can also mean challenging yourself. Stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something new. It’s so important to get out there and meet new people and socialize. I have met some of my closest friends and the most random of events here in LA!
If I’m not eating right, or not eating enough it really affects me. My favorite meal of the day lately has been lunch.
I used to dread making lunch in the middle of a work day or regret spending money on an expensive salad.

Making time to workout
One of my biggest challenge since moving to LA is keeping up with my fitness routine. I used to walk ALL DAY in New York and now that we live in Los Angeles we drive everywhere. I wasn’t used to scheduling in time to workout, but it has become so important in my self care routine this past year. When I’m feeling confident in my body it really does change the way I carry myself. It also helps to relieve any stress from the work day!
Talking about my day and what’s challenging me
It’s so easy for me to shut down when things get difficult. I’ve made it a point this past year to not close off when things aren’t going right. And instead open up to someone about a problem I may be facing. I don’t have all the answers and the person I’m confiding in might not either, but it ALWAYS makes me feel better.
I usually walk away feeling lighter and looking at my problem with a different perspective.
This has been one of the biggest changes that has helped cope with my social anxiety. If you are feeling the same way, I highly suggest talking to someone. Whether that person be your partner, your friend, mom or therapist. It doesn’t matter, as long as they lend a listening ear!
