One of my focuses this year is to really focus on getting my hair back to a healthy state. I took almost a year off of having my hair dyed to give it a much needed break. I remember the first time I went to see a hair stylist, I think I was around 12. She put two bleach blonde streaks framing my face. Well that was it, I was hooked.
People from my high school used to say, “I can only tell in what grade we were in by the color of Nikki’s hair in the photos.” I would dye my hair by season, by mood, or if there was some major change that happened in my life. Going through a bad breakup? Let’s dye my hair black. Oh summer is here? let’s go bleach blonde. And the cycle continued. Until I reached 25 and my hair felt rubbery and couldn’t take it anymore. It was time for a change. Not in hair color, but how I treated my hair.
How to repair damaged hair
1. Take a break from coloring your hair
It’s easier said than done believe me. If your anything like me, your hair could use a break. On top of that if your hair is really damaged, maybe take a break from diving into the ocean or getting your hair wet at the rooftop pools next summer. Salt water and chlorinated water are the worst offenders when it comes to hair. Every time you dive in the pool or ocean, your color fades.
On top of that if you leave your hair wet for too long it causes your hair to swell, which in turn creates splits and breakages. Give yourself a break from the bleach or dye for a few months and your hair will thank you!
2. Choose a great shampoo and conditioner to help repair damaged hair
When it comes to choosing a shampoo and conditioner for everyday I really want something that is good for my hair. I use Schwarzkopf Gliss™ Ultimate Repair Shampoo and Schwarzkopf Gliss™ Ultimate Repair Conditioner everyday and it really helps my hair come back to life. This combo actually won the Allure Best of Beauty Award – best shampoo & conditioner for damaged hair which is amazing since this combo is so affordable! GLISS® Hair Repair™ products combine their patented keratin technology with essential benefits for your hair like color protection, intense hydration and long-lasting volume. GLISS® Hair Repair™ products are not only amazing for damaged hair, they are great for everyday hair care as well! 3. Use a hair treatment 2-3 times a week
I’m not a huge fan of hair treatments that involve me not being in the shower. It just gets messy, my dogs try to eat my hair, or I forget I have a hair mask on. Schwarzkopf Gliss™ Ultimate Repair Anti-Damage Mask for heavily damaged hair is a favorite of mine. On top of being packed with 3x liquid keratin it’s a treatment I can do while in the shower. After washing your hair simply massage the mask into wet hair and leave on for one minute. Strong and healthy hair here we come!
4. Give your hair a break from the heat
Air drying is your new best friend. Honestly, my hair has never felt better and a owe a huge part of that to no longer using my blow dryer. If I have an event to go to then yes I’ll head to drybar, but other than that it’s air drying all the way! There’s nothing worse than blow drying your hair then hitting it with a straightener or wand at 400 degrees. Not so fun fact: When I was in high school my BFF and I used to get ready together before school and take an IRON to each others hair. You know the old take turns laying down and putting hair on towel waiting for our BFF to literally iron our hair. Dear hair: I apologize for the abuse throughout the years. Here’s to 2018, the year we repair our damaged hair!
